Hillary: Global LGBT Advocate

Hillary Clinton gay rights

These are just some of the many reasons I support Hillary Clinton for President. If you believe that LGBTs deserve the same rights as their straight counterparts (not MORE or SPECIAL rights), please join me. With anti-LGBT hysteria once again sweeping across the states – North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee come to mind – it is most important to elect a Democratic President and Congress to fight the wave of homophobia that has sprung up in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of marriage equality. Religious zealots and the politicians they support will stop at nothing to put us back in our place as second-class citizens and perverted sinners. And with the prospect of a new Supreme Court justice being confirmed before the end of President Obama’s term chancy at best, we MUST NOT allow a Republican president the chance to name a right-wing conservative to the bench. You see, I believe the future is on the side of equality. And progress. And love. Because love ALWAYS WINS.

My 2015 ‘Best Of’ on Twitter

The following are my best tweets of the year – based on retweets, likes, and replies. Thank you to all my friends, fans, followers, and foes; 2015 is my best year EVER on Twitter!

An Open Letter to the City Council of Holland, Michigan

On Friday, June 26, The Supreme Court of the United States affirmed what the majority of Americans support and believe: that the freedom to marry who you love is the right of every American, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This is a giant step forward in ensuring that we are all created equal and we all deserve the same rights.

However, the ruling does nothing to protect those in the LGBT community from getting fired from their jobs or being denied housing because of who they love or marry. When making a lifelong commitment with our partner, we can share the joy and happiness of our marriage with our friends and family, but at the same time we also face the possibility of losing our job or being evicted from the place we call home.

That’s just not right.

On June 15, 2011 the Holland City Council, in a 5-4 decision, voted not to add “sexual orientation and gender identity” to the city’s human relations and fair housing ordinances and the equal employment opportunity policy. This came even after a year-long Human Relations Commission study that recommended the change to the ordinance.

In the four years since that vote, many hearts and minds have changed. The overwhelming support and success of Holland Area Pride 2015 showed that Holland is an open, welcoming, and diverse community. The time has come to take the next step and join the more than 30 municipalities in Michigan that already treat their LGBT residents as equals.

Now is the time to show our city, our state, and the country that Holland, Michigan is open, caring, and welcoming to everyone in our community, no matter who they are or who they love.

Holland City Council, it’s time for a vote.

Send Some Harvey Milk Love to Hate Group AFA

This week, the hate group American Family Association sent out an urgent request to its members calling for a boycott of the recently released Harvey Milk commemorative postage stamp. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay public official to be elected to public office in California. He was assassinated on November 27, 1978. The stamp was unveiled on his birthday – Harvey Milk Day, May 22. The AFA post, “A Drag Queen Was Behind USPS Harvey Milk Stamp” called the stamp a perversity, and directed the reader to do the following:

1. Refuse to accept the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by your local post office. Instead, ask for a stamp of the United States flag.

2. Refuse to accept mail at your home or business if it is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp. Simply write ‘Return to Sender” on the envelope and tell your postman you won’t accept it.

I have a better idea, one that will honor Harvey Milk AND support The U.S. Postal Service.

1. Visit your local Post Office and buy a book of Harvey Milk postage stamps.

2. Address an envelope to:

American Family Association
PO Box 3206
Tupelo, MS 38803

3. Write “DONATION ENCLOSED” on the outside of the envelope, affix stamp, and drop in mailbox.

What you enclose in the envelope is up to you, of course. As for me, I will enclose a simple note:

Mitt Romney’s Captive Audience

Jerry Falwell was the televangelist that made $millions telling his sheep that the 9/11 attacks should be blamed on “the ACLU, the gays and lesbians, and the fornicators.” That worm is dead now, but he used his money to start Liberty University, which prohibits homosexual teachers AND students. On Saturday May 12, default Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney delivered the commencement address at this school. He elicited cheers and wild applause when he said he believes marriage should only be between one man and one woman. This from a man whose great-grandfather had FIVE wives. Know this: The doors to Heaven and Hell are adjacent and identical.
